CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART IN THE NEW CHURCH
Founded by private collector Piet Viljoen, The New Church Museum opened to the public on 21 November 2012 with its first exhibition curated from the permanent collection. Situated in New Church Street in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, the museum is located within a double-storey Victorian house, renovated to present the museum’s collection of contemporary African art. To inaugurate the public presentation of the collection, artist Penny Siopis was invited to curate an exhibition.
As this is the first show, Siopis wanted to reflect something of the heart of the museum’s collection in which she sees as a fascination with artistic interpretations of the sovereign human subject. Titled Subject as Matter, Siopis has selected works that emphasize the significance of material form and textual/visual coding in interpreting ‘the subject’.
Artists featured are Avant Car Guard, Bridget Baker, Walter Battiss, Zander Blom, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Willem Boshoff, Wim Botha, Julia Rosa Clark, Steven Cohen, Paul Edmunds, Georgina Gratrix, Nicholas Hlobo, William Kentridge, Moshekwa Langa, Brett Murray, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Robin Rhode, Penny Siopis and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. The quality and range of the work on show attests to the adventurousness and the seriousness of Piet Viljoen’s collecting.
